SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction to the ACT Budget\, how to 
 read it and some advice for writing submissions

 rkshop provides an overview of the ACT budget proc
 esses and supports our members to be able to navig
 ate key documents and write budget submissions.</p
 >\n \n <p>We will first cover a broad overview of 
 how public sector budgets work by stepping through
  the politics of budget-making and the role of key
  actors in creating it. This includes the differen
 t roles and priorities of politicians and public s
 ervants in crafting a budget. We will then work th
 rough how the budget is structured\, with some pra
 ctical advice for reading and understanding the di
 fferent documents that end up in the budget.</p>\n
  \n <p>The second half of the workshop works throu
 gh the practical elements of developing a budget s
 ubmission by breaking down how policies make it in
 to a budget. This includes looking at the timeline
  for the development of budget proposals\, what th
 e public sector and government cover in their inte
 rnal submissions and some practical notes on writi
 ng budget submissions.</p>\n \n <h3><strong>About 
 the facilitator: </strong></h3>\n \n <p>Jacob Prie
 rgaard a social policy researcher who joined ACTCO
 SS in June 2025. Jacob began his career in the Aus
 tralian Public Service\, working on social securit
 y and then health policy. While in the public serv
 ice\, he worked on a variety of social policies an
 d programs including the implementation of the Chi
 ld Care Subsidy\, developing more humane complianc
 e policies in the aftermath of Robodebt\, and supp
 orting international engagement on climate change 
 and health. Jacob was the Director of safety and q
 uality in healthcare during the early stages of th
 e Covid-19 pandemic before moving to the Crawford 
 School of Public Policy at ANU to undertake a PhD.
  His research looks at how public institutions sha
 pe policies that impact disadvantaged people. Jaco
 b is an expert in public policy and Australia’s we
 lfare state and has delivered research and executi
 ve education for multiple government agencies on t
 hese topics. He maintains an association with the 
 Crawford School of Public Policy.</p>\n \n <p>Jaco
 b joined ACTCOSS as a Senior Policy Advisor in Jun
 e 2025\, and is leading ACTCOSS’ work on the 2025-
