ACTCOSS is an active member of the ACT Women's Services Network (WSN), a network of women's services and organisations that support women in the local (and in some cases regional) Canberra community. The network provides a forum for services who aim to respond to a range of community needs, to share information, and to develop responses and progress work on common issues.
WSN recently submitted feedback to the draft legislation addressing privacy and technology-facilitated abuse. The Crimes (Invasion of Privacy) Amendment Bill 2017 intends to make it clear that non-consensual creation or sharing of intimate documents, or threat to do so, is a crime. WSN's submission stressed that consent is a crucial factor in determining whether a crime has occurred and supported the draft's reference to 'intimate documents'.
We also recommended that cultural groups, the LGBTIQ community, and people with disability are consulted in the definition of 'intimate document'; that the DPP must give approval for charging anyone under 18 years; and that local community groups are funded for education and awareness campaigns for the Canberra community.
