Building Better Boards: The ACTCOSS Governance Workshop Program Over Two Sessions

ACTCOSS Governance workshops are designed to meet the needs of people interested in, or who have recently been, appointed to a board member position with a not-for-profit organisation in the ACT. This training targets people who have never been on a board or who have limited experience on boards. The workshops are interactive with participants contributing their own experiences and sharing knowledge, as well as a networking opportunity.

The Governance workshop will be broken into two parts – the morning session focuses on board governance and strategy and the afternoon session focusses on financial management. Workbooks and resources will be provided to participants at both sessions. Participants are welcome to come to either session, or the whole day - but will need to register accordingly.

9.30am – 12.30pm: Session 1: Board Governance and Strategy

This workshop provides an overview of a range of governance topics for anyone who would like an introduction to the roles, responsibilities and obligations of board members. It is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss common problems experienced by new board members.

The key learning outcomes from the workshop include principles of good governance, strategy vs management, office bearer roles, organisational culture, legal and financial responsibilities.

1.15pm – 4.30pm: Session 2: Financial Management – presented by Betty Ferguson

This workshop provides people on boards with a basic understanding of the role of the board in relation to financial management. The key learning outcomes include understanding financial reports, the relationship between financial statements, the importance of budgets, good financial practice, risk management and internal controls.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants to organise own lunch.
