Information Session: the role of the Commonwealth and ACT Ombudsman

Join the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman for an informative session that will give community workers practical knowledge and tools to better support clients when engaging with the Ombudsman. The Commonwealth Ombudsman investigates complaints about Australian Government agencies and services and looks at systemic issues that affect the community. The Ombudsman also performs the role of the ACT Ombudsman; handling complaints about ACT Government agencies.

The session will cover:

  • the core functions of the Commonwealth Ombudsman and the ACT Ombudsman in investigating complaints, addressing systemic issues, and improving public administration
  • the jurisdictions of the Commonwealth Ombudsman and ACT Ombudsman (what they have the power to look at)
  • the different speciality roles of the Ombudsman
  • how to make a complaint to the Ombudsman (including on behalf of a client with their consent); and
  • case studies on relevant areas including vulnerable groups

Why attend?

By attending this session, ACT community workers will:

  • gain a better understanding of the Ombudsman’s role and processes
  • learn practical strategies for helping clients navigate complaints handling systems including making a complaint to the Ombudsman
  • access resources that can be shared with clients to support self-advocacy; and
  • build stronger connections between the community sector and the Ombudsman’s office
