Submission: Regulating for the prevention of new fossil fuel gas network connections

20 April 2023

ACTCOSS provided a submission to the ACT Government’s consultation on their proposed regulation to prevent new fossil fuel gas network connections. There are some concerns around who uses the network, what for and equity implications of the proposed regulation. While most gas use is residential, business and industrial connections use a much larger amount of gas per connection. In summary, ACTCOSS recommends that all new buildings and developments should be prevented from installing a new gas network connection. If households and/or businesses require a new gas connection they should be able to apply for an exemption. Exemption applications should be scaled for the applicant and only be granted where there is no viable electric alternative.
