Inquiry into Insurance Costs in the ACT

14 March 2025

This submission from the ACT Council of Social Service Inc. (ACTCOSS) and VolunteeringACT (VACT) highlights the challenges faced by community organisations in the ACT due to rising insurance costs. ACT Community organisations provide essential services to vulnerable populations, and are facing increased insurance premiums that threaten service delivery and force cutbacks. The submission outlines the need for various types of insurance, including public liability and volunteer coverage, and stresses the lack of affordable options in the current market.

ACTCOSS and VACT propose recommendations such as adjusting government funding contracts to account for insurance cost increases, creating tailored insurance products, and advocating for a more transparent insurance process. They also urge the ACT Government to explore Government-back insurance schemes and improve climate resilience for community organisation in Government-owned facilities. Addressing these concerns is vital for ensuring the continued operation of ACT community organisations and maintaining the support they provide to the ACT community.
