Report: Food security, food assistance and the affordability of healthy food in Canberra

31 May 2019

This report explores food security, food assistance and the affordability of healthy food in the ACT.

Over 25,000 people in the ACT are experiencing food stress – spending 30% or more of their household income on food compared to 14% within the average household. The report identifies systemic barriers faced by people in various circumstances, including insufficient levels of income support for students and people seeking employment.

Food assistance supports people’s nutritional wellbeing and provides a means of social connectedness. Greater support is needed to better understand and respond to food insecurity in the ACT, especially addressing its underlying causes.

This research was funded by the ACT Government.
