Submission: Corrections and Sentencing Legislation Amendment Bill

ACTCOSS made a submission to the Inquiry into the Corrections and Sentencing Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 regarding proposed changes supporting the implementation of the Smoke-Free AMC project. The project intends to ban the sale, possession and smoking of tobacco products in the Alexander Maconochie Centre. While expressing support for the aims to improve the health and wellbeing of smoking and non-smoking staff and detainees, our submission focuses on advocating for a phased approach to the ban. High rates of smoking in the prison, particularly amongst Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander detainees require well-planned, culturally safe and ongoing supports for a successful transition to a non-smoking facility.
